ACS marks National Cancer Prevention Month, World Cancer Day

Find messages and materials for these and other moments here and on social media.

Our sweethearts often get all the attention mid-month, but February also marks several cancer awareness moments as well as cultural observances. ACS this February will recognize National Cancer Prevention Month and World Cancer Day and will mark several external moments, all in support of our vision to end cancer as we know it, for everyone.

ACS is using these key observances as opportunities to share different key messages with targeted groups. Team members and volunteers can help support this work by sharing content available on ACS social media channels related to these dates and learning more about each effort.

For National Cancer Prevention Month, we should share the message that there’s no sure way to prevent cancer, but you can help reduce your risk by making healthy choices such as eating right, staying active, and not smoking and to learn how at cancer.org/healthy. Also, we can reach out to parents with the message that HPV vaccination is cancer prevention. When given between the ages of 9-12, the HPV vaccine can prevent more than 90% of HPV cancers, including most cervical cancers. Learn more at cancer.org/hpv.

ACS efforts around World Cancer Day will focus on increasing awareness of ACS’ health equity specific programming and impact in the global space and driving action such as donations and event engagement.

World Cancer Day is held every Feb. 4 and is led by the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) as a movement to unite under one voice to face one of our greatest challenges in history. The 2023 World Cancer Day theme is “Close the Care Gap” and is all about raising awareness of the equity gap that affects almost everyone, in high- as well as low- and middle-income countries, and is costing lives.

A key message is that ACS is committed to saving lives from cancer and reducing the threat of the disease, not just in the US, but globally as well. Learn more about our global work at cancer.org/global. Cancer does not discriminate – it affects everyone, in every country. Key facts include:

  • Cancer is the second leading cause of death worldwide and is responsible for 10 million deaths a year.
  • Globally about 1 in 6 deaths are due to cancer and approximately 70% occur in low/middle income countries (LMICs).
  • Internationally, deaths each year from cancer greatly outnumber deaths from HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria combined.
  • By 2040, the global cancer burden is expected to increase to 30.2 million new cases and 16.3 million deaths annually.

During February, ACS also will recognize externally on multiple marketing channels American Heart Month, Black History Month, Gallbladder and Bile Duct Cancer Awareness Month, International Childhood Cancer Day Feb. 15, and Maha Shivarati Feb. 18

Please be sure to check ACS brand social media channels (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, and TikTok) throughout February for opportunities to share messaging and information about these key moments.
