National Volunteer Leadership Award winners announced

David Ford and Bryan Sherwood honored in Dallas this week.

David (Dave) Ford of West Hills, CA, pictured at left, and Bryan Sherwood of Dallas, TX, pictured at right, were awarded the American Cancer Society Volunteer Leadership Award. This prestigious honor is presented to volunteers who have served as a volunteer leader for enterprise-wide programs, initiatives, or Board level committees or task forces, and to others who have provided long and distinguished service to ACS at the enterprise-wide level.

Dave Ford has served as one of the top volunteer spokespeople and leadership faces of ACS as the organization navigated the health and cultural crises coming out of the pandemic. He has presented on multiple national panels related to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DE&I), sharing his experiences as a Black man and two-time cancer survivor. Dave has successfully engaged corporate, union, and individual contributors in fundraising efforts, and has also lobbied and advocated on behalf of ACS CAN at all levels of government. He is passionate about health equity and has helped ACS to strengthen local and national NAACP ties while actively seeking to engage diverse leaders to get involved in ACS volunteer leadership opportunities. Dave has been a leading voice for compassion, health equity, empathy, and trust in the spirit of the organization’s DE&I principles.

At just 30 years old, Bryan Sherwood is one of American Cancer Society’s most innovative and strategic volunteer leaders. Three years ago, Bryan became one of the leads of the Nationwide Relay For Life Volunteer Leadership Team (the highest level of Relay volunteer leadership) and helped lead our Relay For Life campaign through a pandemic year, leveraging his digital savviness and strategic mindset to spur victories across the board at ACS. Bryan paved the way for the Nationwide Relay For Life Leadership Team’s evolution to become inclusive of all community fundraising. In addition to leading the National Community Fundraising Leadership Team, he was also part of the nationwide Top Performer workgroup and a volunteer on the local Dallas Making Strides Against Breast Cancer committee. Bryan demonstrates that rare combination of being a highly strategic volunteer leader who is also willing to roll up his sleeves and do the hard work it takes to get the job done. After receiving the award, Bryan joined the organization and will serve as the Senior Director, Relay For Life.

Congratulations and many thanks to Dave and Bryan for their steadfast commitment to improving the lives of cancer patients and their families!
