ACS releases 2023 Annual Report

The American Cancer Society has released its Annual Report for 2023. It can be viewed in dynamic digital form here.

The report showcases our accomplishments, recognizes the contributions of our partners, volunteers, and leadership, and details revenue and spending information for the 2023 calendar year. For 2023, ACS has maintained its fiscal spending rate. More than 81% of our revenue is invested in delivering our mission.

Here are just a few highlights:

  • As part of our Discovery work, we committed to investing more than $445 million in grants across the country, including our AHEAD (Advancing Health Equity and Addressing Cancer Disparities) grants, which focus on funding innovative strategies that increase quality cancer screening, clinical trials, and cancer care closer to home.
  • Our ACS CAN advocacy team addressed gaps in cancer care by advocating for specific policies focused on access to patient navigation innovation in early detection and biomarker reimbursement.
  • Our Patient Support team worked to eliminate barriers to treatment, providing people facing cancer with more than 500,000 free nights of lodging and engaging more than 600 stakeholders across the field of patient navigation. We were pleased to see our Road To Recovery and Hope Lodge programs returning to pre-COVID levels of service for the first time since the pandemic.
  • Our Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) team outpaced planned growth in our Health Equity Ambassador program and launched a new internal ASPIRE Leadership Academy to continue to develop diverse talent within our organization. The team also co-hosted two Cancer Center DEI Summits, which convened cancer center leaders, researchers, and administrators to share insights on how institutions are enhancing DEI efforts.

The cancer burden is unacceptably high

For the first time ever, more than two million new cancer cases are expected to be diagnosed in the US in 2024. Unfortunately, many of these people will face barriers to the care and treatment they need. Through our mission pillar work in advocacy, research, and patient support, along with our development efforts, we are working to reduce these cancer disparities and advance health equity. Across our pillars, here’s how we addressed those challenges:

  • Discovery
Increased investments in cancer research grants (currently investing more than $450 million)
  • Patient Support
Touched 79.8 million lives through our vital support programs
  • Advocacy
We’re the only cancer organization in all 50 states, working at every level of government (local, state, federal) and in every branch of government (legislative, executive, judicial).

Key Facts About Its Pieces and Parts
