Hope Lodge kicks off expansion with ribbon cutting

New wing at Cleveland community will add 12 suites for guests.

The American Cancer Society celebrated the opening of a new expansion of the Joseph S. and Jeannette M. Silber Hope Lodge with a ribbon cutting in Cleveland, OH, on Thursday, Aug. 29.

The expansion includes a new 10,000-square-foot residential wing that will add 12 suites for Hope Lodge guests. The soon-to-be-ready suites will increase guest accommodations from 31 to 43 rooms, providing 4,380 more nights of free lodging to cancer patients traveling to Cleveland to receive world-class cancer care. Ultimately, each year, the Hope Lodge community, which is within walking distance of two of the country’s top ranked cancer treatment centers, the Cleveland Clinic Taussig Cancer Center and UH Seidman Cancer Center, will save guests $3 million in lodging costs.

The ribbon cutting also included special recognition for one of ACS’ partners as Cleveland Clinic was officially recognized as the 2023 American Cancer Society Health System Partner of the Year. Cleveland Clinic collaborates with ACS to provide programs and services that engage communities across Ohio with a special focus on health equity. In 2023, Cleveland Clinic was awarded both an ACS lodging and transportation grant to help provide patients with rides to treatment and assistance with hotel stays when Hope Lodge was not available. As we know, one of the greatest barriers to cancer patients completing their care is simply getting to and from their treatment. These transportation and lodging grants are essential in holistically caring for our patients.

“We are grateful for the accessible state-of-the art cancer care Cleveland Clinic provides patients and families, and thrilled that our aligned partnership continues to grow and thrive impacting the ACS vision of ending cancer as we know it, for everyone,” said Lenora Oeters, ACS vice president, Ohio/West Virginia. “We are inspired by Cleveland Clinic’s unwavering dedication to their patients and excellence in cancer care. Please know how endlessly grateful and appreciative we are for your partnership. As we continue to work together, we know there are many days ahead filled with hope for cancer patients and their families.”

Cleveland Clinic contributed $2 million toward the Cleveland Hope Lodge capital campaign, impacting cancer patients and caregivers well into the future. ACS and Cleveland Clinc have collaborated on projects within the scope of patient support, research, community events, and health equity. In 2023, Cleveland Clinic pledged an additional $1 million over 4 years to the Cleveland Hope Lodge operations. These critical dollars will assist the Hope Lodge with the costs incurred annually to operate the expanded 43-room lodge, and to ensure patient comfort and safety.

Beyond this, Cleveland Clinic is home to multiple ACS-funded researchers working on projects related to bladder, breast, and colorectal cancer. Since 1966, an incredible 295 grants have been awarded to 227 investigators at the Clinic. Together, we are advancing cancer research, pursuing new treatments, and exploring scientific frontiers that will save lives.
