ACS-funded researcher and survivor highlighted impact on childhood cancer breakthroughs.

On Wednesday, Aug. 23, all ACS team members and supporters were invited to join Discovering the Future, a virtual conversation with an ACS funded researcher and a passionate childhood cancer survivor and advocate. Watch the replay by clicking here. This live event highlighted how donor dollars are making an impact and saving lives today, while changing the future of childhood cancer breakthroughs.

Leading into September’s childhood cancer awareness month, participants heard from ACS funded researcher Esther Obeng, MD, PhD, assistant member in the Department of Oncology at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and an attending physician in the Department of Bone Marrow Transplantation and Cellular Therapy. Her lab investigates the genetic mechanisms of myelodysplastic syndromes (a group of bone marrow failure disorders with a high risk of progression to leukemia), with the goal of developing targeted therapies with fewer side effects.

Dr. Obeng was joined by Joseline Molina, a pediatric Nephroblastoma survivor. Now in her early 20s, Joseline was diagnosed with stage IV Williams Tumor (also known as Nephroblastoma) at the age of four and has gone on to live a full and inspiring life while continuing to educate others about childhood cancer.
