NFL and ACS hit two milestones: 1M people helped by Crucial Catch and $20M raised

Tuesday, Oct. 8, is Crucial Catch Day

This year marks the 11th season of the Crucial Catch program partnership between the NFL and the American Cancer Society. ACS and the NFL just hit two milestones by reaching more than 1 million individuals with cancer prevention information, screening education, and patient support, and raising more than $20 million since 2009 to save lives in the fight against cancer. Together we have provided breast cancer screenings to over 327,000 men and women in underserved communities. 

Crucial Catch is saving lives from cancer through prevention and early detection of multiple cancers, including breast cancer. Crucial Catch helps more people catch cancer early, when it may be easier to treat. Crucial Catch also addresses the unequal burden of cancer in underserved communities through the ACS CHANGE grant program currently being conducted in all 32 NFL team markets.

This October, the NFL and ACS are teaming up to attack cancer in several ways: 

  • The NFL Crucial Catch London sweepstakes will send one lucky winner on the trip of a lifetime to visit London and watch the Houston Texans and the Jacksonville Jaguars play at Wembley Stadium on Sunday, Nov. 3. The $10 minimum donation for a chance to win goes to support access to health care, free screenings, and education about cancer through CHANGE grants.   • Crucial Catch Games will be played throughout October by each NFL team to support either a specific cancer or multiple cancers. NFL Crucial Catch games will feature players, coaches, fans, and referees in apparel supporting multiple types of cancer, as well as additional on-field and in-stadium branding to help raise awareness for the campaign. Much of the apparel worn at games by players and coaches, along with brand new Crucial Catch game items, will be auctioned off at the NFL Auction. 
  • Crucial Catch Day October 8 will include an event in Los Angeles at Chargers stadium with players, cancer survivors, and volunteers learning how to reduce their cancer risk. The day will also feature an NFL-led national social media push to encourage NFL fans to download The Defender. ACS staff and volunteers are encouraged to participate.   • Crucial Catch Apparel - Nike produces team-branded apparel featuring the Crucial Catch logo. Proceeds from apparel sales go to support ACS' mission. 

Fight Like a Bronco: Local Crucial Catch Highlight 

After Denver Broncos Assistant Turf Manager Luke Kellerman was diagnosed with colorectal cancer, he began expanding the Crucial Catch campaign. While Kellerman tragically lost his battle with cancer at age 34, his legacy lives on through the team’s “Fight Like a Bronco” campaign. The team’s efforts resulted in more than 12,000 people gaining access to colorectal screenings opportunities across Colorado. 

Since 2016, the Broncos have donated over $120,000 to the American Cancer Society to help fund research and prevention efforts. They are supporting breast cancer awareness, colorectal cancer screenings, ovarian cancer research, and pediatric cancer research. To date, more than 72,000 cancer screening opportunities have been provided across Colorado.
