ACS stands with the LGBTQ+ community, allied against cancer

Pride Month celebrates the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer/Questioning (LGBTQ+) community. While health equity is always at the core of our mission, June provides a dedicated opportunity to listen, learn, and act in support of our LGBTQ+ team members, volunteers, and communities world-wide. Senior Vice President and Chief Diversity Officer Tawana Thomas-Johnson shares, “We celebrate and thank our LGBTQ+ team members, volunteers, and community members for their contributions to our country and to our ACS mission. Ending cancer as we know it, for everyone includes standing and acting for equity, especially health equity, with and for the LGBTQ+ community.”

The updated ACS and ACS CAN Pride logos were designed after consulting with the ACS Diversity, Equity & Inclusion team. The colors of the progressive pride flag were incorporated to represent this important community. These logos demonstrate our commitment to the LGBTQ+ community and our work to help ensure everyone has an opportunity to prevent, detect, treat, and survive cancer.

An updated Get Screened component to include the LGBTQ+ community has been created. Watch for these I love you. Get Screened. messages on cancer.org and ACS social media channels (Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook).

LGBTQ+ people are disproportionately burdened with risk factors and screening disparities. They experience obstacles to cancer prevention, detection, treatment, and survival. The LGBTQ+ Facts on our Fight explains, “To ACS and ACS CAN, health equity is essential to our mission. It’s what we believe in, and it’s a moral imperative. Most importantly, if we are to reduce cancer disparities, we need to listen to the experiences and perspectives of LGBTQ+ people with cancer, their caregivers, and their communities, and engage them in the fight against cancer every step of the way. It will take all of us working together to do this.”
